Case Study 1

Design Brief: a back garden with a sunny aspect and light sandy soil. The rectangular lawn was uneven and frequently showed yellowing patches, particularly during the dry summer months. The client wanted to improve the lawn and create a planting scheme that provided some structure as well as providing colour throughout the seasons.

The lawn was repaired and has recovered naturally without the need for chemical sprays. It is now much more resilient to the changing weather patterns.

The garden consisted largely of a rectangular lawn in very poor condition which had been subjected to a number of mechanical and chemical processes. The soil quality is poor - being very sandy and stony - and free-draining. The borders were created by turning the turf over to improve moisture retention, and then adding a layer of top soil to improve the planting depth. The lawn was repaired using offcuts of good turf from border areas and has subsequently improved and recovered naturally without the need for chemical sprays.

"Many thanks - you have created a beautiful view from our back door out into a garden that gives us so much pleasure (BW)"
