An evergreen perennial, with creeping stolons producing spreading clumps of tough, linear, grass-like green leaves to around 40cm long. Upright stems, slightly shorter than the leaves, bear clusters of small, bell-shaped, white or pale purple flowers with spreading petals in summer. Flowers are followed by round blue-black berries. Long lived and very durable. Happiest in some shade. Soil not too wet.

A clump-forming herbaceous perennial to 80cm in height, with narrow grey-green leaves striped with creamy-white. Flowers small, deep purple with a reddish sheen, the falls vivid cerise flushed deep purple. An elegant addition to pond or stream margins, this Iris is also suitable for smaller gardens where it can be used in watertight pots or barrels.

Sometimes known as Japanese spurge, Pachysandra is a small genus of very dwarf shrubs, popular for over a century for their ability to spread into a dense evergreen carpet beneath other taller shrubs. They all need some degree of shade and acid soils, hence their popularity for underplanting rhododendrons.It is fully hardy and evergreen. It will tolerate full sun if the ground is consistently moist, but it is more valuable as a carpeting plant in dry shade, sheltered from cold winds.
