Gardeners' World Live 2025

'Earth Heals' by Sue Arthur and Ian Potts is a garden inspired by a recent visit to Hiroshima to search for the trees that survived the atomic bomb dropped on 6th August 1945. The Hibakujumoku or 'A-bombed trees', represent the extra-ordinary resilience of trees to survive, recover and thrive under the most extreme circumstances.

We are delighted to be awarded a GOLD medal. A big thank-you to our team and sponsors: Stonewarehouse.co.uk, Hilliers Trees, Jackson's Nursery and Stanton Nursery

The design evokes a 'tsubo niwa' or courtyard garden, and uses elements of traditional Japanese garden design. We have used 'yaki sugi' - a traditional timber preservation technique by burning - to represent the devastation in Hiroshima following the bomb blast. Among the Japanese design principles are simplicity, balance, enclosure and naturalness, and the important concept of 'ma' or the space between elements. The central ginkgo tree stands as a symbol of hope.
